Bridges in the Future

Some days are best spent doing the one thing you already know will make you happy. For me, that meant rising early and into Tai Chi, and it was wonderful from the first step to the last, the kind of morning that sets everything after it up to land well.

What followed turned out to be very little, in the best sense. A walk to brunch, chasing a few Western flavours I've been quietly missing. A little shopping, though everyone who knows me knows that's never been my strength. And at day's end, a walk along the boardwalk, watching the sun slip behind the thin stretch of water that separates Shenzhen from Hong Kong.

It was a genuinely peaceful moment, made only better by the company beside me.

The harder part of the day arrived in the evening, when I finally sat down and looked honestly at the six months ahead. They're starting to look full. The ongoing review still demands focus. A shift to Chen-style Tai Chi and Kung Fu waits at the far end of it. Underneath all of that, a new business taking shape — a first event to plan, a company to start, a work visa to untangle, a trip back to Bali to gather what little I still own there. The list keeps unspooling.

None of it means much yet. They're only bridges standing somewhere in the future, waiting to be crossed when their turn comes. And the future, however busy it looks from here, isn't where I actually live.

The only place I ever really have any hold on is this one. Right now.
