Original Thinking in a School Built on Repetition

The middle of any week feels like the right moment to check in on how things are actually going, and today, if I'm honest, feels a little bumpy.

I've been stuck in something of a rough patch with the review, weeks in now, and still trying to work out its actual shape. What am I studying? What exactly am I meant to be reviewing? In practice, it seems to mean training myself and occasionally asking a question; I sometimes manage to answer. Either that means I've somehow been doing it right all along, which I doubt, or "review" is simply a more formal name for self-practice.

Genuinely not sure.

Since I keep circling the same question without landing anywhere useful, I've decided to stop chasing the concept and just work the weak points I already know need attention, one at a time. Not thrilling. But it clears a path forward without the guesswork.

Today's practice was solid, not remarkable, but earned. There's a buzz building around school about an upcoming competition, one I have no real interest in, though it's clearly stirred something in a lot of the other students. People keep asking if I'll compete. My honest answer is always the same: no, it's not for me. Which usually gets the same reply back — "it's a great way to test your knowledge", a statement met with the same smile, the same answer.

Last night I found myself turning that exchange over, wondering why everyone seemed to be holding the identical opinion, word for word. My guess is a coach floated the idea once, and it spread through the students like fire through dry grass. From there, I fell down a small rabbit hole — wondering what original thought even looks like inside a school built almost entirely on repetition.

No tidy conclusion came out of that one. Just more questions without answers, which, honestly, is exactly what I love about this life. Though stepping back, it's obvious not everyone shares that particular taste.

None of this adds up to much. Just thoughts and observations, the kind I love turning over, and the kind that seem to make other people a little nervous.
