The Day I Received

Today was different, and not in the ways I wanted. Last night I rolled over in bed, nothing dramatic, just from one side to the other, and my hip cracked loudly enough to wake me.

I didn’t think much of it at the time. I think I even smiled at the noise, imagining something locked had finally let go. I was wrong.

By the time I got up for my morning coffee, I knew something was off. Every step sent pain shooting from the hip down to the ankle. I could see that a day on my feet exploring this wonderful city might push me past my pain barrier, and every step I took reminded me of it. It got to the point where I needed painkillers to keep moving.

It was a day I’d rather forget. We made the best of it, but more than once I thought I’d have to head back and rest. Nothing makes you feel older than needing to stop when the possibilities of life seem to be one step further than you can reach.

Looking back, it didn’t really matter. And the more importance I gave it, the more it hurt. Not smart, and not in line with everything I’ve been practising, but that’s where my head was today.

By nightfall, I wanted comfort food, which meant pizza and a cold beer. With the company of a beautiful woman whose smile could melt a heart, the evening became something lovely.

It wasn’t the day I hoped for. It was the day I received, and perhaps the one I needed. I’m hoping a good rest does the body some good. These things tend to pass with the right care and enough sleep, and with fingers crossed, I’ll be good to go tomorrow.

Time will tell, as it always does. For now, just the hope of a beautiful day to come is enough.
