Decent At All Of This

Today felt like the toughest day of training in a very long time.

Thirty-five degrees. Humidity that turned the air into something closer to warm water than anything worth breathing. The kind of conditions that don't ask you to work harder — they simply make everything cost more than it should, and then charge interest on top.

On most days like these I move through without too much concern. Today was different. Uncomfortable in a way I don't particularly want to revisit, which presents its own problem given that the forecast offers exactly the same for the next five days running.

I had better get used to it.

The good news is that I made it through. I pulled back on what I had planned — there was no other honest option — but there was still a great deal achieved, which matters more than the gap between the plan and the reality.

The evening session brought something worth noting. I joined two other students and we began the process of reviewing Tie He — the first real steps into what the coming months will ask of me. We didn't get far. But what we did cover improved significantly through the process of going back to it, and the corrections my coach requested landed with a clarity I wasn't entirely expecting. They made sense immediately. They were easy to implement. The foundation, it seems, is more solid than it sometimes feels from the inside.

That was a good thing to discover.

Maybe this review won't be the reckoning I had quietly feared. Maybe it will be something closer to the opposite — an experience where two years of hard, foundational, unglamorous work begins to find its polish. Where I finally arrive at something I can honestly call decent. Where the next steps forward start to become visible.

That is the attitude I am choosing to carry into what comes next.

And attitude, as this place has taught me more than once, is not nothing.
